Pergolas
Pergola buying guides
A pergola can cost around $500 for a simple DIY kit to $15,000 or more for a large installed model with a motorized louvered roof. The right choice depends on whether it stands on its own or attaches to the house, the material (aluminum, steel, or wood such as cedar), the roof type, and whether you build it yourself or pay for installation.
Guides coming soon. We haven't published any pergolas guides yet. We'd rather show you an empty shelf than filler. When we do, they'll follow the same editorial policy as our generator guides: specs from manufacturers, sources linked, no fake testing claims.
What we plan to cover
- Freestanding vs attached pergolas, and what each needs for footings and anchoring
- Aluminum vs steel vs wood/cedar: upkeep, weather resistance and lifespan
- Open slats vs fixed roofs vs louvered (including motorized) roofs
- DIY kits vs professionally installed, and the real total cost at each price point
Safety note: Check wind and snow load ratings, local permit and setback rules, and HOA rules before you buy. Attached pergolas and motorized roofs with wiring may need a licensed contractor or electrician.
