Heating
Home heating buying guides
Replacing a furnace or boiler is usually a four- or five-figure decision, often made in a hurry when the old one fails. We'll cover furnaces, heat pumps, boilers, ductless heating, and garage and space heaters over $200, so you can plan the purchase before the emergency.
What we plan to cover
- Furnace vs heat pump vs dual-fuel: running costs by fuel price and climate
- Cold-climate heat pumps and how they're sized for heating
- Boilers and hydronic heat: combi vs heat-only
- Garage and shop heaters: electric, propane and natural gas, and their venting rules
Tax credit note: the federal Section 25C credit for heat pumps, furnaces and boilers is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 (IRS). We'll cover state and utility rebates instead.
Safety note: Gas, oil and propane appliances can produce carbon monoxide. Furnaces, boilers and vented heaters should be installed by a licensed contractor with the required permits, and every home with fuel-burning appliances needs working CO alarms.
