Outdoor TVs are built for full shade, partial sun or full sun. Buy for your sunniest viewing hour and coldest winter, so a new pool or pergola doesn't mean a new TV.

Buy right once: Too dim a TV washes out in sun, and too narrow an operating range means hauling it inside each winter. Plan the power, data and speaker wire runs before the hardscape goes in.

Before you buy, check:

  • Direct sun on the screen at the times you watch
  • Winter low and summer high against the operating range
  • A GFCI-protected outlet and a route for speaker wire

Shade, partial sun or full sun

Sun moves through the seasons, so check the spot at the times you actually watch, not just at noon.

Climate: operating temperatures and weather ratings

The brightness class is only half of it. SunBrite rates the Veranda 4 to operate from 32°F to 122°F (storage to -24°F)[1] and the Pro 2 from -24°F to 122°F[3]. If your winters freeze and the TV stays up, turn the Veranda off in freezing weather or choose the Pro 2. In hot deserts, keep any screen out of afternoon sun when highs approach 122°F. Near the coast, look for powder-coated aluminum housings and IP55 or better; all three TVs here have IP55 or sealed aluminum builds.

Outdoor speakers and wiring

Both speaker picks are passive, so they need an amplifier or receiver. The Polk Atrium 6 is All-Weather certified (salt fog, UV and MIL-STD 810 immersion), works with 10 to 100 W per channel and carries a 5-year warranty[4]. The Sonos Outdoor pair is IP66, rated from -13°F to 149°F, and pairs with a Sonos Amp for app control[5]. For wire, Crutchfield says 16-gauge is fine up to 50 feet to 8-ohm speakers, with thicker wire for longer runs; buried runs need direct-burial-rated wire[6].

Power and mounting

Selling or flipping soon?

  • A wall-mounted outdoor TV may be seen as part of the patio, so say in the contract whether it stays.
  • Pre-wired speaker locations and a weatherproof outlet at the TV spot photograph well and cost little.
  • Skip a full-sun TV purchase just for listing photos.

FAQ

Can I use an indoor TV outside?

Not for long. Indoor TVs aren't sealed against rain, dust, insects or condensation, and they're too dim for sun. Outdoor models are built for it and rated by sun exposure.

Can an outdoor TV stay out all winter?

Check the operating range. SunBrite's Pro 2 operates down to -24°F; the Veranda 4 operates from 32°F and can be stored down to -24°F.

What gauge wire do outdoor speakers need?

For 8-ohm speakers, 16-gauge up to about 50 feet, 14-gauge to about 80 feet and 12-gauge to about 120 feet. Use direct-burial wire underground.

Sizing tools

Outdoor TV by sun and climate

Pick the brightness class for your patio, then check the TV's operating temperatures against your winters and summers.

How it works: Outdoor TVs are rated by where they go: full shade, partial sun or full sun, with brightness rising from about 600 to 1,000 nits. The temperatures compared are each maker's published operating range.

Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.

Outdoor speaker wire gauge by run length

The wire gauge to use from the amplifier to your outdoor speakers.

How it works: For 8-ohm speakers, 16 AWG is fine to about 50 ft, 14 AWG to about 80 ft and 12 AWG to about 120 ft; lower-impedance speakers and long runs need thicker wire. Buried wire must be rated for direct burial.
