Home security cameras and doorbells

A camera system gets wired into the house, so buy one with spare channels and enough storage now. Adding a driveway or back-door camera later shouldn't mean a new recorder.

Buy right once: Count every door and approach you may want covered, then buy a recorder with room to spare. Check your doorbell wiring before choosing a doorbell.

Before you buy, check:

  • Number of cameras now and later
  • Days of recording you want to keep
  • Doorbell wiring (16–24 VAC) or an Ethernet run

Sizing tools

Camera count and NVR storage calculator

How many days of 24/7 video your recorder holds, using Reolink's formula.

How it works: Days = TB × 8 × 1024³ ÷ ((main + sub kbps) × cameras × 3,600) ÷ 24. 6,144 kbps is the default main stream on Reolink's 8MP cameras. Motion-only recording lasts longer.

Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.

PoE power budget

Add up what your PoE cameras and doorbell draw and check it against the switch or NVR budget.

How it works: Total = cameras × watts + other devices × watts. Per port, IEEE 802.3af delivers up to 12.95 W at the device, 802.3at (PoE+) 25.5 W and 802.3bt up to 71 W.

Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.

Video doorbell chooser (wiring and ecosystem)

Start from the wiring at your door, then your smart-home app.

How it works: Wired Ring and Nest doorbells need a 16–24 VAC transformer rated 10–40 VA; Reolink's PoE doorbell runs on 802.3af PoE and records locally.

Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.
